Did the year 1865 hold a special significance for the First Baptist Church of Richardson? Absolutely! Nineteen souls gathered at the Elm Grove schoolhouse, laying the foundation for what would become this very church. They named their fledgling congregation Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, under the guidance of Pastor Joseph Jennings Butler. The First Baptist Church of Richardson plaque commemorates this humble beginning. By 1868, thanks to charter member and Dallas County pioneer William Huffhines, Mt. Calvary had its own sanctuary and cemetery on donated land. The congregation thrived, growing to 95 members in just under three years. Fast forward to 1885, a pivotal year for the First Baptist Church of Richardson. The congregation voted to relocate five miles north to the burgeoning town of Richardson. Philemon W. and Mary Huffhines generously donated land at the corner of Greenville Avenue and Phillips Street. A new sanctuary rose on this site in February 1886. Disaster struck in 1909 when a storm ravaged the building. Undeterred, the community rallied, and a new brick structure was completed on the same spot in 1910. This building served the growing congregation until 1953 when it was replaced with a more modern structure. The following year, 1954, marked another significant milestone. The church officially adopted the name we know today: First Baptist Church of Richardson. The church continued its expansion, acquiring the current 24-acre site at Central Expressway and Arapaho Road in 1976. The new sanctuary, dedicated in February 1987, stands as a testament to the enduring faith and commitment of the First Baptist Church of Richardson. The church has consistently served the community with various outreach programs, reflecting its dedication to serving others. The First Baptist Church of Richardson Plaque stands as a silent witness to this remarkable journey of faith, resilience, and community service, spanning over a century and a half.
