“A beacon of faith for over fifty years,” whispered an elderly woman to her grandson, as they stepped onto the grounds of St. Michaels Lutheran Church. The church, a stately presence on Normandale Boulevard, has been a cornerstone of the community since its humble beginnings in 1962. What began with the purchase of 17.5 acres by the mission board of the MN South District, Missouri Synod quickly blossomed into a vibrant congregation. St. Michaels Lutheran Church held its first official service in March 1964 at Ridgeview Elementary School. From those twelve founding families, St. Michaels Lutheran Church has thrived, its membership now encompassing hundreds of families from across the southwest metro area and beyond. Amazingly, the church has not strayed far from its roots. All four worship centers that St. Michaels Lutheran Church has called home still stand on the original plot of land. That first church structure? Now repurposed as an office building and preschool, a testament to the church’s commitment to growth and adaptation. The second building, where the congregation once gathered, now serves as the welcoming lobby. The third, a space filled with memories of past services, functions as a spacious fellowship hall. And finally, in 2003, a new worship center, with seating for 1100, was dedicated, marking a new chapter in the church’s journey.
