Established on September 7 1965 Mary Mother of the Church stands proudly. Archbishop Leo Binz oversaw its creation. Father Donald Burns became its first pastor. Imagine 550 charter households forming its initial community. This wasn’t just the founding of a church. It was the planting of a seed a community born from faith and nurtured by shared belief.
Mary Mother of the Church wasn’t built overnight. Early Masses were held in a school gymnasium. Religious activities happened in a Burnsville rectory. This temporary setting however underscored the unwavering devotion of the community. Their faith flourished even amidst less-than-ideal circumstances.
In 1967 a Building and Finance Committee took shape. An architect was commissioned. The church and the original Parish Center began to rise from the ground. The first Mass in the new church was a momentous occasion. Celebrated on March 9 1969 it marked a significant milestone. Archbishop Binz presided over the formal dedication on May 18.
Growth was rapid. By the mid-1970s the parish served 1645 households. An addition to the Parish Center was needed. More space meant more opportunities for community engagement. More space to share the faith.
A Long Range Planning Committee formed in 1986. They reviewed needs in staffing services facilities and finance. Existing space was maximized. A new 18000 square foot addition was built. This expansion reflected the parish’s continued growth and commitment to serving its ever-expanding community.
Mary Mother of the Church celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2015. It is a vibrant parish with a strong commitment to community service. Its welcoming spirit is evident in its excellent programs for all ages. It’s a place where faith is nurtured and where people find a spiritual home. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith community and growth. Mary Mother of the Church is more than just a building. It is a living embodiment of belief and a testament to the strength of community.
