Picture this. A small group of Palestinian immigrants. They arrive in Chicago’s bustling South Side in 1954. Their dream? To build a place of worship. A haven for their growing families. This is the beginning of the Mosque Foundation.

From humble beginnings the Mosque Foundation quickly becomes a central part of Chicago’s diverse religious landscape. Initially meeting in rented spaces the group finally purchases a small building. This serves as their first mosque. It’s a far cry from the impressive structure we see today.

The Mosque Foundation’s journey is filled with challenges. Finding suitable land is difficult. Fundraising requires incredible effort. Yet the community perseveres. They raise funds through bake sales and appeals to charitable organizations. Their devotion inspires.

In 1981 after years of hard work a new mosque opens in Bridgeview. It’s built on what was once swampy land. The original prayer hall holds only 300 worshippers. No one could have predicted its future. The new mosque would become a catalyst for growth. A thriving Muslim community springs up around it. Hundreds of new homes. Two Islamic schools. A community center. Dozens of businesses. The small prayer hall no longer suffices.

The Mosque Foundation isn’t just a place of prayer. It’s a center for learning. It hosts numerous study circles in Arabic English and Spanish. The Mosque Foundation also offers essential social services. They provide food and Zakat charity. They organize family and marital counseling. They offer imam services at hospitals and funerals.

The Mosque Foundation continues to expand. Further expansions in 1998 and 2008 accommodate the growing congregation. Today more than 5000 worshippers attend prayer services. The Mosque Foundation is open for 20 hours a day. It serves a community of more than 50000 Muslims. The Mosque Foundation truly is a beacon of faith hope and community. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of its founders. And the unwavering dedication of its members.
