Deciding to leave your mark on Istanbul as a young Sultan is no small feat. Sultan Ahmed I, not yet twenty, took on this challenge. He commissioned what we know today as the Blue Mosque, officially the Sultan Ahmed Mosque.

Its construction began in 1609 and was completed in 1617. The Sultan Ahmed Mosque stands as an iconic landmark. It represents Ottoman power and prestige.

The Blue Mosque’s location is significant. It was built on the old Byzantine Hippodrome. This put it near the Hagia Sophia. This location allowed the mosque to dominate the city’s skyline. It was possibly intended to rival the Hagia Sophia.

Its architect, Sedefkar Mehmed Agha, aimed for overwhelming size and splendor. The design reflects classical Ottoman style. It incorporates Byzantine architecture.

The mosque’s construction wasn’t without controversy. Islamic legal scholars protested. They argued that imperial mosques should be funded by spoils of conquest. Ahmed I had no major victories. He had to use treasury funds.

Despite opposition, the project moved forward. The result was a grand structure. Its luxurious decoration swayed public opinion. It became one of the most popular mosques in the city. The surrounding neighborhood is now known as Sultanahmet.

The interior of the Blue Mosque is famous for its blue Iznik tiles. Over 20000 tiles adorn the walls. These tiles feature flowers, trees, and abstract patterns. More than 250 windows allow daylight to flood in.

The central dome is impressive. It is 77 feet in diameter and 141 feet high. Four large pillars support it. Eight smaller domes surround it.

The Blue Mosque has six minarets. This was unusual. It initially caused a stir. Legend says the Sultan added a seventh minaret to the mosque in Mecca to resolve this. This showed its primacy over the Blue Mosque.

Inside the mosque can hold 10000 worshipers. Muslims use it for daily prayers. Tourists can visit when it’s not in use for worship.

The mosque complex includes Ahmed’s tomb, a madrasa and other buildings. These buildings add to the mosque’s historical significance. The Blue Mosque has undergone restorations. A major restoration finished in April 2023.

The Blue Mosque stands as a testament to Ottoman architecture. Its beauty and historical importance continue to inspire awe. Sultan Ahmed I’s legacy lives on through this magnificent structure. Even Pope Benedict XVI visited the Blue Mosque in 2006. This marked only the second papal visit to a Muslim place of worship.
