Ruins whisper secrets. Don’t they? This is the Majláth-kastély in Bakóca. Before you stands a silent testament to centuries past. A once-grand Baroque manor its elegance now faded.
The Majláth-kastély wasn’t always this way. It began as a smaller noble manor. The Melczer family built it in the 1720s. They were from Sáros County a family with a long history. Imagine the Melczers the original owners. Their life here. They lived in this very building. This was their home. This was their world.
After the Melczers the Majláth family inherited the estate. They expanded the manor. They added a romantic-style facade. The most famous Majláth was György. He held high positions in Baranya County. He even helped establish the Pécs Savings Bank. He also played a key role in the Pécs-Mohács railway plans. A remarkable man.
A charming anecdote surrounds his marriage. His bride-to-be Stefánia. Her father a wealthy landowner had two other daughters already married to noblemen. They disapproved of György. They thought he wasn’t grand enough for their sister. The father’s reply? “I’ll gladly give my daughter Stefánia to György. I want an intelligent man in my family.”
Tragedy struck in 1909. Young József Majláth fell from the castle stairs. A terrible accident. It was during a summer visit to his grandmother Stefánia Prandau-Hilleprand.
For a time the Majláth-kastély was a children’s home. Children laughter and tears echoed through these halls. They were cared for by the Sisters of Mercy. The home even had its own school and kindergarten. Generations of children grew up within these walls.
Later the building needed repairs. A complete renovation happened in 1983. The facade was restored. The roof strengthened. New staircases were built.
Today the Majláth-kastély stands mostly empty. It’s a reminder of the rich history of the families who lived here. Of the children who called it home. And of the stories it holds. Stories waiting to be discovered. Stories that whisper from the ruins. Stories only this old building can tell.
