Haven’t you wondered about the story behind this modern church? The Hundige Kirke stands here as a testament to a community’s growth. It reflects a unique blend of history and modern architectural inspiration.
Hundige Kirke serves Hundige-Kildebrønde Sogn. It is one of two churches within this parish. Hundige Kirke is the newest of the two. The older one is Kildebrønde Kirke.
Let’s step back to the 1960s and 70s. The Køge Bugt area experienced a population boom. Greve Municipality was also affected. The existing village churches could no longer accommodate everyone. Church leaders recognized the need for a new worship space.
Ejvind Draiby designed Hundige Kirke. He cleverly integrated a church center into the structure. Construction commenced in February 1975. The cornerstone was laid on June 21, 1975. The inauguration took place on October 31, 1976.
Interestingly, the architect drew inspiration from an unusual source. He looked at the reconstructed buildings of the Trelleborg Viking Fortress. This influence is visible in Hundige Kirke’s design.
Hundige-Kildebrønde Sogn wasn’t always known by that name. Originally, it was Gildebrønde Sogn. Over time, the name evolved to Kildebrønde Sogn. The construction of Hundige Kirke prompted a discussion about renaming the parish. In 2014, the parish council requested a change. The official name became Hundige-Kildebrønde Sogn in November 2014.
Inside Hundige Kirke, you will find a beautiful and functional space. The church has an altar, a pulpit and a font. An organ completes the interior.
So, the next time you pass by Hundige Kirke, remember its story. Think of the Viking fortress inspiration. Appreciate its role in serving a growing community. Hundige Kirke stands as a symbol of faith and architectural ingenuity.
