Did you ever hear of a synagogue modeled after one in New York City? Right here in Montevideo’s Ciudad Vieja neighborhood stands the Sinagoga de la Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí. It’s a beautiful testament to the Sephardic Jewish community’s history in Uruguay. The Sinagoga de la Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí, also known as Beth Israel, opened its doors in 1956. Its design was inspired by the Portuguese Synagogue in New York, a stunning example of early American synagogue architecture. The architect Miguel N. Revello brought that inspiration to life here in Montevideo. The Sephardic Jewish community’s presence in Montevideo dates back to the early 20th century, when families began arriving from Turkey seeking refuge from religious intolerance and antisemitism. The first arrivals, Leon Cantuni and David Moron in 1907, paved the way for others. Families like the Cuencas, Margounatos, Sassons, and Seroussis followed in 1909, settling in the Ciudad Vieja. This area, now a historical landmark, became the cradle of their new lives in Uruguay. They built families, businesses, and social connections, all while preserving their Judeo-Spanish language and traditions. As the community grew, they established institutions to help newcomers and even acquired land for a cemetery. They initially held services at the Templo Shalom and Templo de Forasteros. In 1932, several of these organizations merged to formally establish the Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí del Uruguay. Their first temple opened in the Ciudad Vieja in 1933. The Sinagoga de la Comunidad Israelita Sefaradí stands as a symbol of their perseverance and their vibrant cultural heritage in Uruguay.
