High above Lisbon’s bustling streets Parque Eduardo VII unfolds. A sprawling green oasis it offers a breathtaking panorama.

Parque Eduardo VII isn’t just a park. It’s a living testament to history and diplomacy. King Edward VII of the United Kingdom visited Portugal in 1903. His visit strengthened the ties between the two nations. The park was renamed in his honor. Before its current name it was known as Parque da Liberdade. It replaced the Passeio Público. That was destroyed to make way for Avenida da Liberdade in 1879.

The park’s design is a masterpiece. It features long Portuguese paved walkways. These divide the park into two distinct zones. One zone contains the Estufa Fria. This 1.5-hectare greenhouse boasts exotic plants. You’ll find lush vegetation including palm trees and banana trees. There’s even a Hot Greenhouse filled with cacti and tropical birds. The other zone features a lake with carp and a children’s playground. The playground’s design is quite unique. It is shaped like a galleon ship.

Parque Eduardo VII also holds cultural significance. The Lisbon Book Fair takes place annually within its bounds. This is a much-loved event attracting many visitors. Near the greenhouses you’ll find the Carlos Lopes Pavilion. It was originally the Portuguese pavilion at the 1922 Rio de Janeiro International Exposition. It’s been renamed to honor Carlos Lopes. He won Portugal’s first Olympic gold medal in 1984.

At the northern end of Parque Eduardo VII stands a monument. It commemorates the Carnation Revolution. This monument designed by João Cutileiro caused some controversy. Its unique shape is rather striking. Next to the monument is the Amália Rodrigues Garden. It pays homage to the famed Portuguese fadista. The largest Portuguese flag in the world often flies here at the northern end of the park.

From the park’s viewpoint you get an unparalleled view of Lisbon. The Marquis of Pombal Square and Avenida da Liberdade stretch out below. The Tagus River shimmers in the distance. On a clear day you might even see the Arrábida hills. Parque Eduardo VII offers more than just a pretty face. It offers a journey through time. A journey through history culture and breathtaking beauty. Take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Let the grandeur of Parque Eduardo VII wash over you.
