Gazing upwards, the unique silhouette of Gereja Santa Maria Regina strikes a dramatic pose against the Bintaro Jaya skyline. It resembles a ship’s sail, a modern ark navigating the sea of life. Gereja Santa Maria Regina isn’t your typical Indonesian Catholic church. You won’t find the usual overt symbols here. Instead, its design speaks volumes through subtle metaphors. This church, completed in 2009, stands as a testament to the dedication and hard work of the growing Catholic community in Bintaro Jaya. It’s a relatively young parish, officially established in 2010 by Archbishop Ignatius Suharyo Hardjoatmodjo. What makes Gereja Santa Maria Regina truly stand out is its architectural symbolism. The sail-like structure isn’t just aesthetically pleasing. It embodies the journey of faith, a voyage across the sometimes turbulent waters of life. The church echoes two biblical stories: the calling of Peter and the calming of the storm. The design invites parishioners to embark on a “journey into the deep” with Jesus, embracing faith without fear, knowing He is present even amidst the storms. As you step inside Gereja Santa Maria Regina, you’re greeted by a modern rendition of a Marian grotto, guiding you towards Jesus through Mary. Then, ascending the stairs, an intriguing icon catches the eye. Three figures cast in copper represent the Road to Emmaus: Jesus accompanied by Cleopas and another, unnamed disciple. This anonymity is intentional. It invites each of us to become that other disciple, walking alongside Jesus, sharing in the journey. Reaching the altar, the imagery continues. An icon depicts Jesus breaking bread, offering it to the two Emmaus disciples. It reminds us of the Eucharist’s power to refresh and renew our faith. Behind the altar, an icon of the Virgin Mary, the Queen for whom the church is named, reinforces this message of spiritual sustenance. Gereja Santa Maria Regina is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to the journey of faith, a vessel carrying its community through the waves of life.
