Here at Kecil Cape, you feel the ocean breeze. This cape is also known as Tanjung Kecil. It is located on Penang Island.

Penang Island is a key part of the Malaysian state of Penang. The island sits off the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is separated by the Penang Strait from Seberang Perai on the mainland.

The island’s geography plays a vital role in its appeal. Penang Island covers 295 square kilometers. This makes up about 28% of Penang’s total land. Around 45% of the state’s population lives here.

George Town is the city that governs the entire island. It also takes care of the nearby small islands.

Penang Island is Malaysia’s fourth largest island. It comes after Banggi Island, Bruit Island and Langkawi Island. It is also the most populated island city in the country. In 2020, it had 794,313 residents.

The terrain here is varied. It includes hills and a mostly forested interior. The coastal plains are narrow. You can see the widest one at the northeastern cape. This is where George Town first grew. It eventually spread down the eastern coast.

Mangrove swamps are common along the western coast. These swamps and the central hills limit construction. This has kept the western side less urbanized.

Penang Hill rises 833 meters high. It is the island’s highest point. The hilly center is important for water. It also has rainforests that are over 130 million years old.

UNESCO recognized this area in 2021. The Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve covers 12481 hectares. It is part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. This highlights its rich biodiversity and status as a protected forest.

Because land is limited, there have been land reclamation projects. These are in areas like Tanjong Tokong and Gurney Drive. Silicon Island is a large reclamation project that started in 2023. It will cover 920 hectares. This island is designed to be a hub for high-tech businesses.

Andaman Island is another creation off the north coast. Gurney Bay is also being transformed. It will be a new waterfront attraction for Penang.

Two bridges connect the island to the mainland. The Penang Bridge starts in Gelugor and ends in Perai. The Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge links Batu Maung to Batu Kawan.

George Town has a rich history. It was named after King George III. Before the British arrived, the area was called Tanjung Penaga. This was because of the many penaga laut trees. These trees grew at the cape, or tanjung of the city.

George Town is sometimes misspelled as Georgetown. This is incorrect. The city is also often just called Penang. This is the name of the larger state.

Francis Light established George Town in 1786. It was the first British settlement in Southeast Asia. Its location near the Strait of Malacca drew many immigrants.

The city became the capital of the Straits Settlements in 1826. But in 1832, Singapore took over this role. In 1957, Queen Elizabeth II made George Town a city. This was shortly before Malaya became independent.

UNESCO describes George Town as having a special townscape. This is due to centuries of cultural mixing. The city is also known as Malaysia’s food capital. This is because of its unique cuisine. Preserving this culture led to the city center becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.

The city has a vibrant mix of cultures. George Town is known for its diverse population. This includes Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian communities. This blend creates a rich cultural heritage. It influences everything from architecture to cuisine.
