Remember Holger Danske. This plaque commemorates a brave resistance group. The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske Plaque marks the spot where it all began.

The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske played a vital role during the German occupation. The plaque above the door reads “The Resistance group HOLGER DANSKE was formed here during the occupation 1940-1945”. This simple inscription speaks volumes about courage and defiance.

The group started in the spring of 1943. The name “Holger Danske” comes from Danish mythology. Holger Danske is a legendary hero who will awaken to defend Denmark when needed. This name was fitting for a group fighting against foreign occupation.

The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske was one of the largest resistance groups in Copenhagen. By the end of the war in 1945, it had around 350 members. Imagine the dedication of these individuals. They risked their lives daily.

The group was structured into smaller units. These units had no contact with each other. This ensured the resistance could continue. Even if one unit was compromised, the others would remain safe.

The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske engaged in sabotage and assassinations. They are credited with about 200 liquidations of informers. These actions were necessary to protect their operations.

The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske performed over 100 sabotage actions. One major action was the bombing of the Forum hall in 1943. Another was the attack on Burmeister and Wain in 1944.

Two well-known members were Jørgen Haagen Schmith. He was known as “Citronen” or “The Lemon”. Bent Faurschou-Hviid was another prominent member. He was known as “Flammen” or “The Flame”. Both men participated in numerous actions. Both lost their lives in 1944.

The Germans captured the Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske twice. Yet, they could not identify all the members. The group continued its work until the end of the war. About 65 members died during the war. They were either executed or killed in action.

The Modstandsgruppen Holger Danske Plaque serves as a reminder. It honors those who fought for freedom. When you pass by house number 51B, pause for a moment. Reflect on the sacrifices made by these patriots. Their spirit of resistance lives on.
