“Terrage? Who’s Terrage?” someone asks. Rue du Terrage may seem like just another street in Paris. But it holds a story connected to a notable figure.

Rue du Terrage is located in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. This street offers a glimpse into Parisian history. It stretches from Rue Robert-Blache and Rue Monseigneur-Rodhain to Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin.

The street is named after Édouard de Villiers du Terrage. He was an engineer and archaeologist. Born in 1780, he left his mark on France. He died in 1855.

Originally, Rue du Terrage was a dead-end alley. It was known as Impasse du Grand-Saint-Michel. This name came from a sign. The alley’s entrance was on Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin. This was noted on Jouvin de Rochefort’s plan from 1672.

In 1825, the alley was extended. It reached to the Quai de Valmy. Later, in 1867, it was officially named Rue du Terrage.

At number 25 Rue du Terrage, lived the artist Giuseppe Tribus. He resided here between 1931 and 1933.

Today, Rue du Terrage is easily accessible. Gare de l’Est train station is a short walk away. Metro lines 4, 5, and 7 serve the area. Several bus lines also stop nearby.

While walking along Rue du Terrage consider its past. Imagine the engineers and artists. They shaped not only this street but also Paris. Rue du Terrage stands as a reminder. It connects us to the city’s rich heritage.
