“A church built in stages? You’re having me on!” Right here, before the impressive St John the Baptist Church, such a statement might sound unbelievable. Yet, the history of St John the Baptist Church is a testament to the dedication and generosity of its people. The grandeur of this Grade I listed church, designed by the renowned Victorian architect James Brooks, stands as a tribute to their faith.

The story of St John the Baptist Church began in the mid-1870s. The intended site, purchased from the Holland Estate, came with an unusual stipulation: the church had to be constructed entirely of stone. This was a bold move, especially since most churches at the time were built from brick.

This condition, however, only fueled the community’s resolve. Construction began at the east end, with each stage moving progressively westward toward Holland Road. This piecemeal approach meant that as soon as enough funds were raised for a new section, a part of the temporary wooden structure was dismantled, making way for its permanent stone replacement. Imagine witnessing this gradual transformation. The building process, a testament to their unwavering faith, spanned several decades. The chancel was finished by 1885, but the entire project wasn’t completed until the west front was finally unveiled in 1910.

The next time you visit St John the Baptist Church, take a moment to appreciate the uneven floor. This subtle imperfection is a tangible reminder of its unique construction history, a story of faith, perseverance, and architectural ingenuity. This magnificent landmark stands as a tribute to the enduring spirit of the community that brought it to life.
