In the heart of Paris’s 20th arrondissement, we find ourselves on Rue Louis Delaporte. This street, a seemingly ordinary Parisian lane, holds a story far more adventurous than its quiet present suggests. Rue Louis Delaporte isn’t just a street; it’s a tribute to a man who unveiled a lost world.

Rue Louis Delaporte commemorates Louis Marie Joseph Delaporte, a French naval officer and explorer. He lived an extraordinary life, from navigating the high seas to uncovering the wonders of Angkor. Opened in 1932, the street occupies the former site of bastion 10 of the Thiers wall, a vestige of Paris’s defensive past now replaced by a commemoration of exploration. The street begins at Rue Noël Ballay and extends to Rue de Lagny, quietly nestled within the Charonne quarter.

Delaporte’s journey began in Loches, France, where he was born in 1842. He dreamed of a life at sea, a dream he realized upon entering the French Naval Academy at the young age of 16. Little did he know, his maritime career would lead him not only across oceans but through time, to the rediscovery of a forgotten empire. In 1866, Delaporte embarked on a mission to Cochinchina, present-day Vietnam. It was during this mission that he stumbled upon the ruins of Angkor. The ancient Khmer city, with its sprawling temples and intricate carvings, captivated Delaporte’s imagination. He dedicated his life to studying and preserving this lost civilization, comparing its significance to that of ancient Egypt.

Delaporte returned to Angkor in 1873, tasked with collecting Khmer artifacts. His work there was nothing short of groundbreaking. He meticulously documented the site, creating detailed sketches, plaster casts, and even removing some original pieces, now part of the Musée Guimet’s collection. His journey was fraught with challenges, including the initial rejection of his findings by the Louvre. Yet, undeterred, Delaporte persisted. He eventually secured an exhibition at the Palais du Trocadéro, where the French public finally witnessed the splendor of Angkorian art.

Delaporte continued his advocacy as the curator of the Indochinese Museum at the Trocadéro. His passion for Khmer art extended to establishing the École française d’Extrême-Orient, furthering the study and preservation of Southeast Asian art and culture. Rue Louis Delaporte, therefore, represents more than just a Parisian address. It’s a path through history, connecting us to a man whose dedication unveiled a lost world and inspired generations of explorers, scholars, and art enthusiasts.
