What if these stones beneath our feet could talk? They’d tell tales of Marseille’s gateway: the Boulevard d’Athènes. This historic boulevard isn’t just a street. It’s a stage where stories of arrivals, departures, and dramatic turns have played out.

Boulevard d’Athènes stretches from the grand staircase of the Gare Saint-Charles to the bustling Allée Léon Gambetta. From there it merges into Boulevard Dugommier. Finally it meets the famous Canebière. This boulevard serves as a vital artery connecting the train station to the heart of the city.

Its name pays homage to Athens, the capital of Greece. This connection reflects Marseille’s historical ties to the Mediterranean. It also acknowledges its role as a crossroads of cultures.

Imagine travelers arriving at the Gare Saint-Charles. They descend the monumental staircase. The Boulevard d’Athènes unfolds before them. The boulevard presents a direct path into the city’s vibrant core. These stairs were begun in 1919 and were intended to be ready for the Exposition coloniale internationale of 1922. They were only completed in 1925.

The Boulevard d’Athènes has borne witness to more than just everyday life. During World War II, the Hôtel Splendide on this boulevard became a significant site. The Hôtel Splendide replaced the grand Hôtel de Russie et d’Angleterre. In 1940, Varian Fry established the first offices of the American Relief Center there. Later, German authorities used the hotel as a meeting place.

In 1943, the hotel was targeted in an attack by the FTP-MOI. Explosives caused casualties and deaths. This event served as a pretext for the mass arrests and destruction in the Old Port.

Number 12 Boulevard d’Athènes holds its own history. From 1825 to 1987 it was the home to the historic headquarters of Banque Bonnasse.

Today as we stand here let’s appreciate the Boulevard d’Athènes. It is more than just a road. It is a testament to Marseille’s rich past. It has witnessed grand arrivals and tragic events. The Boulevard d’Athènes remains a vital part of the city’s identity.
