A burst of laughter echoed. The Seward Street Slides are not your average playground. They are a San Francisco legend. For decades, these concrete chutes have been a magnet for thrill-seekers. The Seward Street Slides are nestled in the Noe Valley neighborhood. They offer a unique, exhilarating experience. These aren’t your typical playground slides. They are long, steep, and fast. A 14-year-old girl named Kim Clark designed them. She won a design competition in 1973. Originally, the city planned to build an apartment complex on the site. But residents fought back. They wanted a park. And they got one, complete with Kim’s ingenious slides. The slides are made of smooth cement. For a faster ride, grab a piece of cardboard. You’ll often find discarded ones at the bottom, remnants of previous rides. The park’s sign playfully warns, “No adults unless accompanied by children.” But don’t worry, plenty of “childlike” adults enjoy the slides without kids. The two slides run parallel to each other. One is red, the other yellow. The yellow slide is slightly steeper and faster. The climb to the top is a bit steep. But there are stairs and railings to help you. At the bottom, soft sand awaits to cushion your landing. The Seward Street Slides offer a nostalgic thrill. It’s a chance to recapture the simple joy of childhood. The slides are open Tuesday through Sunday, 10 am to 5 pm. They are closed on Mondays. So, are you ready to experience the rush of the Seward Street Slides?
