It’s dedicated to researching the intellectualization of the Filipino language. This shows the university’s commitment to both scientific and cultural advancement.

Walk along the Academic Oval. It’s the university’s main road informally known as Acad Oval. It’s a 2.2 kilometer loop connecting various colleges. These include the College of Mass Communication the College of Music and the College of Engineering. Over 500 acacia and fire trees line the oval creating a beautiful and serene atmosphere. The Alumni Walk a tile-paved footpath is also here. It features commemorative slabs honoring alumni donors.

The UP Carillon tower stands tall. It’s the only manually played carillon in Southeast Asia. Originally built in 1952 it once played the UP anthem. It even played The Internationale during the 1971 Diliman Commune. After years of silence it was restored. The original bells were archived and replaced with newer ones. A Carillon Plaza now sits at the tower’s base.

The Sunken Garden a five-hectare natural depression. It’s located at the end of the Academic Oval. It’s enclosed by several buildings including the main library. Local lore suggests it sinks a couple of inches annually. This may be due to underground trenches or the emptying of former streams. This garden hosts events like the annual U.P. Fair.
