Established in 1953 Beatty Secondary School stands proudly. It first opened its doors along Beatty Road. Three classes began the school’s journey. It was the fourth school built as part of a ten-year education plan. Imagine the excitement of those early students. The school’s initial years were marked by growth. In 1957 the female students transferred to Cedar Girls’ Secondary School. Post-primary classes were introduced for students who couldn’t get into secondary schools. Beatty Secondary became a single-sex boys school.
A significant change came in 1982. The school moved to its current location in Toa Payoh North. A new S$7.5 million building opened its doors. Twenty-eight classrooms and specialized blocks welcomed students and teachers. The new facility represented a major investment in the school’s future. This move provided ample space for the growing student population.
The school’s history also includes milestones in academic achievement. The 2008 graduating class achieved the best overall results in the school’s history. Its high average L1B5 value earned it a Band 9 ranking. This reflected the dedication of both teachers and students. Beatty Secondary’s success demonstrates the school’s commitment to academic excellence.
In 2016 Beatty Secondary School merged with Balestier Hill Secondary School. This integration aimed to address a decline in student numbers. Beatty Secondary now educates deaf students formerly at Balestier Hill and Boon Lay Secondary Schools. This centralization of resources ensures support for students with specialized needs.
The school’s crest and colors reflect the legacy of Admiral David Beatty. The beehive and bees symbolize unity and hard work. The open book above the beehive represents knowledge. The motto Non Vi Sed Arte meaning Not with force but with skill underscores the school’s emphasis on skill and learning.
Beatty Secondary School offers the Express Course a four-year program. The Normal Course is a five-year program with Academic and Technical tracks. This caters to diverse academic strengths. The Normal (Academic) course allows students to progress to the O Levels. The Normal (Technical) track prepares students for technical and vocational studies.
