Amidst the bustling cityscape of Jakarta, a beacon of faith stands tall: Gereja Santapan Rohani Indonesia. The story of this church is deeply intertwined with the vision of one man, Reverend Timothy Dzao Zse Kwang. Born in Shanghai in 1908, Reverend Dzao’s life took a dramatic turn during the Shanghai Great Revival of 1925. He dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel. His ministry extended far beyond China’s borders, reaching Indonesia before World War II. He fostered connections with local churches and even learned Indonesian, sharing the message of Christ through sermons and Bible correspondence. Gereja Santapan Rohani Indonesia traces its roots back to a house on Jl. Drossaersweg, purchased in 1941 by four devoted Christians. They envisioned this house as a church, with Reverend Dzao as their pastor. Although the war prevented his immediate return, the seeds of faith were sown. In 1942, while in Shanghai, Reverend Dzao established Ling Liang World-Wide Evangelistic Mission Association (LLWWEMA). This organization, with its motto “Go into all the world and preach the gospel,” became the driving force behind Gereja Santapan Rohani Indonesia’s mission. Reverend Dzao’s vision extended beyond establishing churches. He recognized the importance of education and training. He founded the Gamaliel Christian University in Jakarta in 1955, followed by an Evangelism Training School the next year. These institutions played a crucial role in equipping future generations of Christian leaders. Gereja Santapan Rohani Indonesia’s journey was not without challenges. Political misunderstandings led to the closure of the Evangelism Training School in 1958. However, the spirit of Reverend Dzao’s mission persevered, and the land was eventually returned. In 1981, the Nusantara Bible Mission Institute (IMAN) was founded on the same site, a testament to the enduring legacy of faith and education. Gereja Santapan Rohani Indonesia stands as a living tribute to Reverend Dzao’s unwavering commitment to spreading the Gospel. It serves as a reminder of the power of faith to overcome adversity and inspire generations.
