Whispers of history echo within these walls. This is the Mansfield Traquair Centre. Once the vibrant heart of the Catholic Apostolic Church in Edinburgh its story is a captivating blend of faith art and transformation.

Built in 1876 by the renowned architect Robert Rowand Anderson this magnificent building initially served as a parish for the Catholic Apostolic Church also known as the Irvingites. The church’s design was purposeful. Anderson intentionally omitted aisles to allow worshippers an unobstructed view of the elaborate liturgical services.

But the true magic of this place lies in its breathtaking murals. Painted between 1893 and 1901 by Phoebe Anna Traquair a leading figure in the Arts and Crafts movement these polychromatic masterpieces are often compared to Edinburgh’s own Sistine Chapel. They depict archangels angels choirs saints and martyrs bringing a vibrant intensity to the neo-Romanesque architecture. Imagine the rich colors originally adorning great cathedrals. Traquair’s work offers a glimpse into that lost splendor. The three-dimensional quality of her work adds another layer of intrigue.

Sadly the Catholic Apostolic Church left the building in 1958. For a time it housed the Reformed Baptist Church. Then it faced a period of decline. Its interior murals decayed and the structure fell into disrepair.

Fortunately in 1992 the Friends of Mansfield Place Church and the Mansfield Traquair Trust formed a partnership. They fought to preserve this architectural and artistic treasure. A substantial Heritage Lottery Fund grant helped. The restoration began in earnest. The meticulous work involved saving Traquair’s murals and reviving the building’s grandeur.

Today the Mansfield Traquair Centre thrives. The sanctuary is a dynamic events venue while the rest of the building houses the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations. The building’s history is still palpable. Every corner whispers stories of faith artistic brilliance and determined preservation. This is more than just a building it is a living testament to the power of belief art and community.
