The light catches the sky-blue exterior. Masjid An-Nur stands tall. It’s the first mosque built in Woodlands. This beautiful building opened on April 20 1980.
Masjid An-Nur isn’t just a mosque. It’s a community hub. It serves Woodlands’ Muslim residents and Malaysians working here. The name An-Nur means The Light in Arabic. It refers to Allah who illuminates. Before An-Nur small prayer halls served the community. They became crowded as Woodlands grew.
Villagers raised nearly $36000 to build a mosque. The Mosque Building Fund helped too. Architect Tony Tan Keng Joo designed this stunning landmark. Its 55-meter minaret is visible from afar. People call it the Blue Mosque of Singapore. The prayer hall has a mimbar with batik-like patterns. A golden dome reflects light. It perfectly embodies the mosque’s name.
In 2013 An-Nur was upgraded. Now it accommodates up to 6000 worshippers. Ramps and lifts make it accessible to everyone. Masjid An-Nur offers more than prayer. It runs Qaryah. This community program organizes activities. These include communal meals Tarawih prayers and Islamic singing. Masjid An-Nur is more than just a building. It’s a beacon of faith and community in Woodlands. It’s a place of worship and a vibrant heart of the community.
