On the edge of Sausalito, a silent giant stands. The ICC Building whispers tales of a bygone era. A time of urgency and heroic efforts. The ICC Building wasn’t always a haven for artists. It began its life in the spring of 1942, born from the necessities of World War II. The war effort demanded ships, and quickly. The relatively uncluttered shoreline near Sausalito became a bustling shipyard known as Marinship.

The ICC Building, then the Yard Office and Mold Loft Building, played a vital role. Pile driving commenced on May 3rd, 1942. Offices were occupied by August 23rd. The building was fully completed by September 15th of the same year. A mere nine months later, on December 7th, 1942, Marinship launched six Liberty ships. These vessels, crucial for wartime transport, were a testament to the speed and efficiency of Marinship. The ICC Building, at the heart of the operation, witnessed it all.

The original Marinship yard consisted of approximately 20 buildings. The ICC Building, spanning approximately 110,000 square feet, was just one piece of this massive puzzle. It buzzed with activity. Architects and engineers planned the construction of Liberty ships within its walls. From this nerve center, the entire shipyard was coordinated.

Marinship received contracts for 100 ships. By the middle of 1945, as the war’s demands lessened, seven orders were cancelled. The final Marinship launch, “No. 93”, took place on October 29, 1945. The ICC Building stood as a silent witness to the changing tides of history. From a hub of wartime activity, it transitioned into a new phase of its existence.

Today, the ICC Building embraces a different kind of creativity. It houses artist studios. The echoes of wartime urgency have faded. They are replaced by the quiet hum of artistic expression. The ICC Building stands as a testament to adaptability and resilience. It serves as a reminder that even amidst chaos and conflict, creation can flourish. It’s a space where history and art intertwine, each adding a layer of richness to the other.
