Originally constructed in 1864 HC Building started as a modest three-story structure. A red brick testament to the era. This early building housed the Correspondent’s Club. Later it would become the renowned Shanghai Club. This exclusive men’s club welcomed prominent British residents and even hosted distinguished guests like former US President Ulysses S Grant.

In 1911 a grand transformation occurred. The old building was demolished. In its place rose the magnificent six-story structure you see today. This Baroque Revival masterpiece showcases an English Renaissance style. Intricate carvings adorn its facade. The interior was equally impressive. It boasted the world’s longest bar a 34-meter Jacobean-style mahogany marvel. The Long Bar became a legendary spot for Shanghai’s elite. Tai-pans and bank managers occupied the prime spots. The social standing of the patrons was reflected in their positions along the bar. The building also housed luxurious guest rooms a smoking room and a library that reportedly surpassed the Shanghai Public Library in size.

HC Building’s story continues beyond its opulent past. The outbreak of the Pacific War in 1941 led to its closure. It was occupied by the Japanese during the occupation. After 1949 the Communist government took control. It served as the International Seamen Club and later the Dongfeng Hotel. For a time it even hosted Shanghai’s first KFC restaurant.

After years of neglect HC Building found new life. In 2011 it reopened as the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund a luxury hotel. It stands as a symbol of resilience elegance and the enduring spirit of Shanghai. The building continues to tell a tale of transformation elegance and enduring legacy.
