Isn’t it intriguing how a pub can be named after an artist? We are standing in front of The Holland Tringham in Streatham. This Wetherspoons pub commemorates Joseph Holland Tringham. He was a Victorian artist with a fascinating life.

The Holland Tringham pub proudly displays copies of his six sketches. These sketches depict old Streatham. They offer a glimpse into the area’s past. Tringham’s connection to Streatham is significant. He lived here at the height of his fame in the late 19th century.

Born in Hammersmith in 1861, Tringham’s artistic journey was unique. He started in the Royal Navy. There he sketched caricatures of his colleagues. His boss didn’t appreciate his artistic talent. Tringham was fired after sketching a caricature of him.

However, this setback didn’t deter Tringham. He became a well-known illustrator. His work appeared in publications like the London Illustrated News. His fame grew and he entered fashionable society.

Tringham exhibited at the Royal Academy. He even received royal commissions. He painted portraits of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Queen Alexandra sent him personally signed letters. He accompanied the Prince and Princess of Wales on their tour of India in 1905-1906.

In 1891, Tringham moved to Streatham. He lived at three different addresses here. He married Beatrice Hall in 1886. The marriage ended in 1902, after his mother’s death.

The rise of photographic reproduction impacted his career. There was less need for line illustrations. Commissions started to decline and Tringham turned to alcohol. The death of his former wife in 1908 affected him deeply.

He sought recovery on the Isle of Man in 1908. He was arrested for behaving strangely. He was certified as insane and died in an asylum at age 45.

Despite his personal struggles, Tringham’s artistic legacy remains. He was a prolific painter and illustrator. He captured scenes of London and the countryside. He was even considered the finest tree painter in the world.

The Holland Tringham pub serves as a reminder of this talented artist. Inside, you can see reproductions of his Streatham sketches. They offer a glimpse into the past of this area. The pub is more than just a place for a drink. It’s a tribute to a local artist who left his mark on Streatham. In 1998 The Holland Tringham pub first opened as a Wetherspoon. It was renovated in 2024.
