A forgotten corner of Singapore’s history. That’s Murai Cape. This seemingly unremarkable point of land holds a fascinating story. It’s not about grand monuments or famous battles. Instead its tale is woven into the fabric of Singapore’s water story. Murai Cape sits near Murai Reservoir one of four reservoirs within the vast Western Water Catchment.

Murai Reservoir itself wasn’t always a reservoir. It was once the Sungei Murai a river flowing towards the Straits of Johor. In the early 1980s the river was dammed. This created the reservoir we see today a vital part of Singapore’s water infrastructure. The construction began in November 1977. This project transformed the landscape and the lives of those who lived nearby.

But Murai Cape’s story isn’t just about water. It’s interwoven with military history. Much of the Western Water Catchment including the area around Murai Cape falls within the SAFTI Live Firing Area. For decades this land has been used for military training. Access has been restricted since October 1999. This means that the quiet beauty of Murai Cape is largely unseen by the public eye.

The area even hosted training facilities such as the Murai Urban Training Facility MUTF. This unique facility was built to mimic a typical town. It included everything from single-level houses to a commercial district. Sadly the MUTF was permanently closed on August 26 2022 to make way for the construction of a new road and the expansion of Tengah Air Base.

Today Murai Cape remains a quiet sentinel. It stands witness to the transformation of the landscape from a flowing river to a vital reservoir. It’s a place where history and nature blend together a testament to Singapore’s past and its future. Remember Murai Cape when you think of Singapore. Its quiet story speaks volumes.
