The Christian Methodist Episcopal Church started from humble beginnings. It began as a movement in the mid-1700s. John Wesley worked with neglected children and incarcerated men. God used him to rescue Christianity. It was rescued from a dry ritualistic tradition. It became a lively faith.

The CME Church traces its history back to this movement. After the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, courageous men and women rose up. They were born in slavery. They took authority over their lives. By 1870, they started the CME Church.

The CME Church has a mission. That mission is salvation, education, and liberation. God blessed this connection of churches. This happened within the first 50 years after slavery. Thousands of souls were won to Christ. Hundreds of churches formed. Dozens of schools were created for children and youth. Also, five colleges and one theological seminary were founded.

Now, there are more than 2,400 churches across the United States. There are also seventeen nations in Africa and the Caribbean. The church still supports four affiliate colleges. It also supports a graduate seminary. This is done annually through Conference Claims.

The CME Church has been central in humanitarian work. It has also been involved in civil rights and human rights around the world. Through ecumenical partnerships it addresses major issues. These include hunger and women’s rights. They also work on adoption.

The CME Church continues to strive. It wants to be the Essential Church for 21st Century Ministry.
