“Machzike Hadath…Upholders of Faith.” The words are etched in stone above the entrance, a testament to the unwavering spirit of the congregation. It’s more than just a synagogue; it’s a hub of Jewish life in London. Founded in 1891, the Machzike Hadath originally stood in Spitalfields, a bustling area teeming with Jewish life. Back then, the synagogue was known as the Spitalfields Great Synagogue, but sadly, like many Jewish communities in London, it was forced to relocate as the times changed. Their story is intertwined with the history of the Jewish community in London. They were once on Brick Lane. Their former synagogue, a beautiful Georgian building, now stands as a mosque. They were known for their dedication to maintaining the highest standard of kashrut, facing controversies and engaging in heated debates with the Chief Rabbi and the broader community. They stood their ground and insisted on their way of life. Today, the Machzike Hadath has found a new home in Golders Green. It’s a vibrant congregation with a rich history, a testament to the enduring faith of the Jewish people. The Machzike Hadath, although relocated, still upholds its commitment to traditions and continues to be a beacon of faith for the community.
