Nirmal Shewakramani a local business owner and devout Hindu saw this need. He took action. He even temporarily closed his family’s jewelry business. This was to host the Ganesh Chaturthi festival in 2014. The event called Devon Ka Raja was a huge success. It brought together people from all over the area. It celebrated the Hindu deity Ganesh’s birth. A large statue of Lord Ganesh imported from India became the centerpiece. This statue served as a new cornerstone of the local religious practice.
Two years later Shewakramani’s vision materialized. The Shree Ganesh Temple of Chicago opened its doors. It quickly became a place for Hindus to gather and practice their faith. It serves as a center for year-round worship. The temple has plans for future expansion. These plans include an ornate facade and a tall tower. Even without these additions the temple continues its important work. It hosts the annual Devon Ka Raja Ganesh Chaturthi Festival. It also offers Hindi lessons and regular worship services.
