Tucked away in Budapest’s 5th district, on Szerb utca, stands the magnificent Szent György-templom. This Serbian Orthodox church holds a captivating history. Serbian settlers, fleeing the Ottoman Turks, built the original church between 1695 and 1698. They constructed it upon the foundations of a medieval church and dedicated it to Saint George. This first structure was later demolished in 1731. The Szent György-templom we admire today arose in 1733. Its design came from the talented Salzburg architect, András Mayerhoffer. The bell tower and main facade were completed in 1752, adding to the church’s grandeur. Stepping inside the Szent György-templom, you’ll notice the influence of Greek Catholic traditions. A wooden partition separates the main sanctuary from the area where men traditionally stood, one step lower. The iconostasis, a richly decorated screen of icons, dates back to 1850 and displays a captivating Italian Renaissance influence. Outside the Szent György-templom, a unique feature awaits. Beside the baroque church, in the garden, a wall stands. Embedded within this wall, facing the garden, are the tombstones of Serbian heroes buried in Pest. This wall serves as a poignant memorial, preserving their memory within the church grounds. The ornate gate on Szerb utca, built in 1776, adds a final touch of elegance to this historic site.
