Nine meters tall they stand. Ten gates of peace. A gift from France. They stand in Hiroshima Peace Park.

These aren’t just gates. They are monuments. They mark the 60th anniversary of the atomic bombing. This was in 2005. French artist Clara Halter and architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte created them. They wanted to bridge Hiroshima’s past and future.

Each gate is made of glass and stainless steel panels. The word “peace” is inscribed in 49 languages. Eighteen different alphabets are used. At night lights illuminate the words. They shine brightly. The words are projected onto the darkness. This creates an extraordinary atmosphere.

The design is deliberate. Ten gates represent Dante’s nine circles of Hell. One more gate stands for Hiroshima’s suffering. This was a living hell. It was unimaginable in Dante’s time. The gates symbolize hope. They show a wish to overcome trauma. They open doors to a peaceful future.

Walk through these gates. Feel the cool glass. Read the words in languages you know and those you don’t. Think of the suffering. Reflect on the hope. The Gates of Peace are more than just an art installation. They are a powerful symbol. They are a reminder of the past. They are a beacon for the future. They stand as a testament to the enduring human spirit. They show our capacity for peace. They stand here in Hiroshima. They invite you to reflect. They urge you to imagine a world without war. A world filled only with peace.
