Have you ever ridden a trolley that’s over 100 years old? The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority in Dallas gives you the chance to do just that. The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority is a nonprofit organization that operates a heritage streetcar line in the Uptown neighborhood of Dallas. It all began in 1983 when two Dallas residents discovered old streetcar tracks buried beneath McKinney Avenue. They had an idea: restore the trolley service. The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority was born. In 1989, the first trolley started running, and it was a sensation.
The trolley is free to the public and is supported by donations and joint subsidies from DART and the Uptown Improvement District. The line runs along McKinney Avenue and a few other surrounding streets, creating a loop that connects to DART’s Cityplace/Uptown Station and St. Paul Station.
Each car has a unique nickname, which is fascinating and definitely adds to the experience. The oldest, Rosie, is over 113-year old. How cool is that? The McKinney Avenue Transit Authority is more than just a tourist attraction. It is a vital part of the community, offering a fun and sustainable way to get around Uptown.
So, come down to Dallas and experience this unique piece of transportation history.
