Glistening ice crystals beckon. You are about to enter a world far removed from Singapore’s tropical heat. This is Snow City. It is Singapore’s first indoor snow center. It offers a unique experience. Imagine stepping into a sub-zero wonderland right here in Jurong East.
Snow City opened on June 3, 2000. It cost S$6 million to build. The Science Centre Singapore and NTUC Income Co-operative Pte Ltd created it. Their goal was to bring a taste of cold climates to Singaporeans. Many residents might not otherwise experience snow.
Before you fully enter Snow City, you’ll pass through the Air Lock. It is kept at 10°C. This helps you adjust to the colder temperatures. This is a vital step. It prepares you for the main attraction.
The Snow Chamber is the heart of Snow City. This 1200 square-meter room is covered in snow. The temperature is maintained at a chilling -5°C. The snow is kept at a depth of 40cm. Every week, 10 to 15 tons of snow are made. A special Snow Gun creates the snow.
How does the Snow Gun work its magic? First, water is atomized using high-pressure compressed air. This water then reaches the Snow Gun. It is pushed through special nozzles. Simultaneously, liquid nitrogen at -196°C is passed through the gun. The extreme cold instantly freezes the atomized water. This creates snowflake-like crystallites. One ton of liquid nitrogen plus one ton of water equals one ton of snow.
Inside the Snow Chamber, a 60-meter-long slope awaits. It is about three stories high. “Snow tubing” is a popular activity here. Visitors slide down the slope on inflatable tubes. It’s an exhilarating ride. There is also a Snow-Play Area. This is designed for younger children. It is a safe space for them to enjoy the snow.
Snow City also offers educational programs. These workshops are available to schools and other groups. They provide insights into the science of snow.
If you are looking for a bite to eat, Alphine Lodge on level 2 offers wine and dine.
