Could a building breathe? At De La Salle University College of St. Benilde Academic Building 4, also known as The Atrium, it seems like it can. This 10-story structure, nestled in the Malate district of Manila, pulsates with the energy of its students. De La Salle University College of St. Benilde Academic Building 4 isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to innovative education. It’s a “campus within a building,” designed by architect Daniel Lichauco. He envisioned a space where learning transcends the classroom walls, spilling out into open-air quadrangles and student lounges. De La Salle University College of St. Benilde Academic Building 4 opened its doors in 2021, adding another heartbeat to the Benilde community. The building’s name, “The Atrium,” is a nod to the heart. Benilde’s president, Br. Edmundo Fernandez FSC, described the students and teachers as the lifeblood coursing through the institution. De La Salle University College of St. Benilde Academic Building 4 embodies this concept. Escalators whisk students between floors, while specialized centers like the School of Diplomacy and Governance and the School of Management and Information Technology hum with activity. Even the Benilde Deaf School finds a dedicated Learning Resource Center within these walls. The Atrium also boasts a unique environmental design. Lichauco incorporated Bernoulli’s Principle of Fluid Dynamics to create a natural ventilation system. Balcony openings on each floor draw air through the building, keeping it fresh and vibrant. Noise-absorbing ceilings ensure a peaceful learning environment. This innovative design creates a harmonious blend of form and function. De La Salle University College of St. Benilde Academic Building 4 is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a breathing, vibrant space where students learn, grow, and connect. It stands as a beacon of innovation, a testament to Benilde’s commitment to providing a truly learner-centered experience.
