Why does the Gereja Paulus Jakarta stand so proudly amidst this modern city? It is a testament to faith, history and architectural brilliance. The Gereja Paulus Jakarta officially known as Gereja Protestan di Indonesian Bagian Barat Paulus is a Reformed church. You will find it nestled in the Menteng area of Jakarta.

Let’s step back in time. Imagine Jakarta in the 1930s when the first foundation stone was laid on January 3, 1936. Construction moved swiftly. The church was inaugurated on June 6, 1936. It was originally named Nassaukerk.

The Japanese occupation brought changes. The church was renamed Gereja Menteng. Dutch priests were initially allowed to continue services. By 1943, they were sent to internment camps. Mass was eventually banned.

In October 1944, a shift occurred. Malay replaced Dutch in the mass. A mix of both languages persisted until Indonesia’s independence in 1945. The church briefly reverted to Nassaukerk. The desire for Indonesian-language services grew.

October 31, 1948 marked a new chapter. The synod of the Protestant Church in Western Indonesia formed. Nassaukerk was renamed Pauluskerk or Gereja Paulus which means St. Paul’s Church.

Now, look at the architecture. Frans Ghijsels of AIA bureau designed the Gereja Paulus Jakarta. He used the New Indies Style. This style is a branch of Dutch Rationalism. It was popular in the Dutch Indies. The church has a cross shape. This symbolizes the four cardinal points. Notice the steeped roofs. Skylights adorn each of the four facades.

The spire is a striking feature. It has four original clock faces that still function. A steeped roof tops the spire. The Gereja Paulus Jakarta is not just a building. It is a living monument. It stands as a reminder of Jakarta’s past and present. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. The Gereja Paulus Jakarta is a vital part of Jakarta’s spiritual and architectural heritage.
