Who could imagine a princess choosing a life of poverty? Right here, in Konstanz, stands a bronze memorial to Elisabeth von Thüringen, a woman who did just that. Elisabeth von Thüringen, born a princess in 1207, was destined for a life of privilege. Yet, her heart yearned for a different path, one of service and devotion to the poor. Married at 14 to Louis IV, Landgrave of Thuringia, Elisabeth von Thüringen embraced her faith with fervor. She used her position to aid the less fortunate, distributing alms and establishing hospitals. The story goes that once, while carrying bread to the poor beneath her cloak, she was questioned by her husband. When she opened her cloak, the bread had miraculously transformed into roses. This “Miracle of the Roses” became a symbol of Elisabeth von Thüringen’s divine purpose and unwavering commitment to charity. Sadly, tragedy struck when her husband died during the Crusades. Elisabeth von Thüringen was then only 20. Facing opposition from her in-laws, she left Wartburg Castle and reaffirmed her vows, dedicating herself completely to a life of poverty and service. In Marburg, she established a hospital where she personally cared for the sick and dying. The Elisabeth von Thüringen memorial here in Konstanz serves as a powerful reminder of her selfless life. She died at the young age of 24 in 1231, but her legacy of compassion continues to inspire us centuries later. Elisabeth von Thüringen’s story reminds us that true wealth lies not in material possessions, but in the richness of our hearts and our devotion to others.
