Here at Barrier Gardens Pier, imagine the Thames glistening before you. This pier plays a vital role on this busy waterway. Let’s dive into the story of Barrier Gardens Pier.

Barrier Gardens Pier is located on the south shore of the River Thames in Woolwich. It’s a short walk from the Thames Barrier and its visitor center. The Port of London Authority or PLA owns and manages Barrier Gardens Pier. They took it over in 2009.

The PLA uses Barrier Gardens Pier as a base. Their Driftwood craft and upper river harbor patrol vessels operate from here. External companies also use the pier. They moor at Barrier Gardens Pier to embark and disembark passengers. These passengers often visit the Thames Barrier Visitor Centre.

In recent years, Barrier Gardens Pier has undergone significant upgrades. A £685,000 modernization project improved the pier’s safety and environmental performance. It also reduced noise. The upgrades allow larger vessels like the London Titan to dock directly at the pier. This makes boarding and disembarking quicker and safer for crews.

The upgraded Barrier Gardens Pier also offers onshore electrical charging facilities. Vessels can plug in instead of using diesel generators. This reduces air pollution. It’s a key step in achieving Net Zero targets on the river.

The PLA’s fleet of 30 vessels keeps the river safe for everyone. These vessels serve a range of users. Fast ferries, cargo ships, paddle boarders, and barges all use the Thames. The PLA’s work at Barrier Gardens Pier supports this diverse traffic.

A key part of the upgrade was modifying the floating walkway, called the Bawley Bay pontoon. It was floated down to Gravesend for modification. New piles were driven into the riverbed to support the pontoon. The extended pier is now in full operational service.

Frankham was commissioned by the Port of London Authority to design the extended pier. The project aimed to provide additional berthing capacity. It also focused on improved environmental performance and enhanced crew safety.

One challenge was the poor ground conditions of the riverbed. The solution was the design of two 38-meter-long tubular steel piles. These piles were driven deep into the riverbed. This ensures they can resist berthing and environmental loading.

The Barrier Gardens Pier extension project contributes to the PLA’s Vision for the Tidal Thames. The new facilities enable vessels to charge from onshore power. This is more environmentally friendly than using generators.

So, as you stand here at Barrier Gardens Pier, consider its importance. It’s a vital hub for river operations. It’s a testament to sustainable development on the Thames. The pier helps protect our environment while supporting the river’s many users. Barrier Gardens Pier is more than just a structure. It’s a symbol of progress.
