Submerged beneath the waves lies a treasure. The Grotte Cosquer. This isn’t just any cave. It’s a portal to prehistory. Hidden within the Calanque de Morgiou near Marseille its entrance lies 37 meters below the sea.

Imagine a time when the Mediterranean’s shoreline was kilometers away. Sea levels were 110 to 120 meters lower. Paleolithic humans walked into the Grotte Cosquer. They left behind stunning artwork.

The Grotte Cosquer was discovered in 1991 by diver Henri Cosquer. He wasn’t the first to know about it though. It was known in the 1970s. An illustration even appeared in a 1971 diving manual. The cave’s submerged entrance was a challenge. A narrow 175-meter tunnel leads to its depths.

Inside the Grotte Cosquer’s air-filled chambers are cave paintings. They date back to two periods. The Gravettian period around 27000 years ago and the Solutrean or Epigravettian period 19000 years ago. Over 517 images adorn the walls.

The oldest known paintings are negative handprints. There are 65 in total 44 black and 21 red. The artists used a unique technique. They blew pigment onto their hands pressed against the rock. Before the Chauvet Cave discovery these were the oldest precisely dated paintings.

Later artwork depicts animals. Horses are the most common with 63 representations. There are also 28 ibex 17 deer 10 bison and 7 aurochs. Remarkably 16 marine animals are depicted. These include seals penguins jellyfish and possibly fish or cetaceans. The cave even has a figure interpreted as a ‘wounded man’.

The paintings and engravings remain a mystery. The cave may have been a sanctuary. Paleolithic people also mined calcite from the cave for unknown purposes. The rising sea threatens the cave’s art. Some paintings are already underwater.

Thankfully a high-precision 3D scan was made. A partial replica opened in Marseille in 2022. It allows the public to experience the Grotte Cosquer’s wonder. The replica is a testament to human ingenuity and the preservation of our shared heritage. The original Grotte Cosquer is a treasure. It’s a window into a distant past a testament to our ancestors’ artistry and ingenuity. Its future depends on our understanding and protection of the environment. Let’s make sure this remarkable piece of history remains accessible.
