Amidst the vibrant pulse of Denpasar, the Gereja Baptis Indonesia stands as a beacon of faith. It has a story as rich and layered as the Balinese culture surrounding it. The Gereja Baptis Indonesia’s journey began quite humbly in 1979. Initial gatherings took place in the warmth of a family home. These meetings laid the foundation for what would become a thriving congregation. By 1980, the group found a more permanent space on Jalan Gadung. They even branched out, helping to establish another church in Surabaya. The Gereja Baptis Indonesia continued to grow under the guidance of Pastor Herry T. Bush and Deacon Tonny Abednego. Then, in 1981, I Gusti Putu Sujana, a respected figure in the community, became the church’s leader. The church faced a major challenge a few years later. Their rented space on Jalan Gadung was no longer available. Through prayer and collective effort, the congregation raised funds to purchase land. In 1985, a temporary home was found at the Wahana Anak Muda Foundation while they worked towards building on their newly acquired land on Jalan Pemuda II. This period marked a significant milestone for the Gereja Baptis Indonesia. The church obtained a loan, began construction, and even celebrated Christmas in their unfinished building. The official establishment of the Gereja Baptis Indonesia came in 1987, when I Gusti Putu Sujana was ordained. The following years saw changes in leadership and a period of transition. Then, in 1993, Agustinus Ponidjo took the helm. The church also secured the official title for their land, a testament to their dedication. After Agustinus Ponidjo stepped down in 1996, the search for a new pastor led to Pdt. Jusak Dwijoranowo. He focused on strengthening the congregation and settling the church’s loan. Recognizing the need for fresh leadership, Pdt. Dwijoranowo encouraged the church to seek a younger pastor. In 2000, Pdt. Edy Suprayitno answered the call. His arrival ushered in a new era for the Gereja Baptis Indonesia. This era is marked by continued growth and a commitment to community outreach. The Gereja Baptis Indonesia story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s a testament to the unwavering faith and dedication of its members. They transformed a small gathering into a thriving spiritual community in the heart of Denpasar.
