Nestled between Augartenstraße and Winterstraße, Unsere Liebe Frau has witnessed the ebb and flow of Karlsruhe life since 1892. This Catholic church, a beacon of faith in the Südstadt district, holds a story as vibrant as the red and pale-yellow sandstone from which it was built. Unsere Liebe Frau wasn’t the first Catholic church in Karlsruhe. The burgeoning Catholic population needed a second space. After delays caused by the Kulturkampf, Grand Duke Friedrich I decreed two new churches. One, a grand edifice (which became the Bernharduskirche), for the Oststadt. The other, a simpler design, for the station district, which became Unsere Liebe Frau. Architect Franz Jakob Schmitt, known for his neo-Gothic leanings, designed Unsere Liebe Frau. He incorporated biblical symbolism, crafting a three-aisled structure with a nave based on the number four. Yet, the light-filled interior deviates from typical Gothic gloom. Inside Unsere Liebe Frau, you’ll discover a trove of art and history. Several works by Freiburg sculptor Joseph Dettlinger grace the space. Among them, a Stations of the Cross, originally framed, the frames later removed and replaced. You’ll also find the Missionskreuz, restored in 1992 after several repaintings. The Herz-Jesu-Altar, once an altar, now a collage. And a poignant Pieta, a copy of a 1400s original from Pforzheim. Look for the busts of church teachers crafted by Josef Eberle in 1896. And the Madonna and Child, gifted to Unsere Liebe Frau in 1905. The church’s bells have their own story. The original bells, cast by Josef Rosenlächer in Konstanz, were largely removed for war purposes in 1917. Only the smallest remained. Replaced in 1921, they were again removed during World War II. The current bells, installed in 1962, chime from a tower, not quite as Schmitt originally envisioned. War damage in 1944 led to a modified reconstruction. The Gothic tower, deemed too heavy for the damaged foundation, was rebuilt shorter. The choir, once curved, is now rectangular. Yet, through it all, Unsere Liebe Frau remains, a testament to resilience and faith, a vibrant thread in the tapestry of Karlsruhe.
