The bells of the Mária Kereszténységek Segítsége-templom have a story to tell. Don’t you think? They weren’t always here.
The Mária Kereszténységek Segítsége-templom stands before you a testament to faith and resilience. Its history begins not with grand construction but with a small chapel. In 1939 a group formed the Kisegítő Kápolna Egyesület. They established a chapel in the basement of a building on Szent László út. This humble beginning marked the first step towards the church you see today.
The 1940s brought significant changes. A separate parish was established. Land was acquired from the city. The ambitious project began. Construction of the church a community center and a rectory was planned by architect Brestyánszky Tibor. World War II intervened. Only the community center was completed. This building however became a chapel in 1943. That same year the parish became independent.
The post-war period saw continued development. In 1946 a bell tower rose. It housed bells salvaged from a church in Ipolyság. These bells had been removed during the war. The rectory was expanded in 1965. In 1968 the church was elevated to the status of a parish. The interior of the church was redesigned in 1969. This was when the liturgical space was created. Exterior renovations followed in 1979.
The Mária Kereszténységek Segítsége-templom stands as a symbol of hope. It reflects the enduring spirit of a community. From a basement chapel to a full-fledged parish church. It shows how faith prevails even through war and adversity. It’s a place of worship where history resonates within these walls. Each stone whispers of dedication perseverance and belief. The bells ring out not just for the faithful but for all those who appreciate the enduring power of the human spirit. It is a quiet place where the community and its history find solace. This quiet place of worship endures. This quiet church on Rokolya utca reminds us of enduring faith.
