Hidden in the heart of Marseille lies Place Pierre Bertas. A small square, perhaps, but one brimming with stories. Pierre Bertas, a name synonymous with Marseille’s vibrant past. He wasn’t just a name on a plaque. He was a man of many facets: a teacher, a writer, a journalist, a politician, and a passionate advocate for his city. Born in Marseille in 1864, Bertas, whose Provençal nickname means “bush of thorns,” truly embodied the spirited nature of his personality. He began his career as a teacher, part of the first generation of secular educators appointed after Jules Ferry’s educational reforms. His teaching journey took him from Arles, where he befriended prominent Provençal poets like Mistral and Aubanel, to various districts within Marseille itself, including Lodi Street, Les Crottes, and Saint-Louis. Bertas’s time as a teacher, however, was marked by his rebellious spirit. He protested against the “villainous laws” – likely referring to legislation he deemed unjust – which led to his transfer to Saint-Louis. This prompted his dramatic resignation. He then dedicated himself fully to journalism and political activism, having already been involved in progressive political clubs since he was sixteen. Bertas’s political life was a whirlwind. He supported his friend Antide Boyer’s candidacies, publicly challenged Eugène Rostand, the poet’s father, and joined the newspaper *Le Petit Provençal*. His connections and support from the newspaper helped him secure a place on the municipal council, led by Siméon Flaissières, in 1895 and 1896. As an elected official, Bertas became an advocate for Marseille, even envisioning it as a free port and a separate department with special communal and commercial privileges. His political career, though impactful, eventually waned after some electoral defeats. He then turned his focus primarily to Provençal literature, history, and journalism, becoming a respected local scholar. Place Pierre Bertas then, isn’t simply a square. It stands as a testament to this multifaceted man who dedicated his life to Marseille, a city he loved and fought for, in the classroom, the newsroom, and the political arena. His legacy lives on, etched in the heart of the city he called home.
