Built in 1863 Selwyn Chapel stands as a testament to faith and craftsmanship. It was originally part of Bishopscourt Bishop George Selwyn’s residence. The chapel was more than just a place of worship. It was a reflection of Selwyn’s personal beliefs. He was a member of the Camden Society. This group championed 14th-century Gothic architecture. Selwyn tried to bring this style to New Zealand. The chapel’s dimensions are noteworthy. It measures 17 by 38 feet. Its height reaches 22 feet to the roof. This angle was considered essential for a true church by the Camden Society. The roof overhangs the 10-foot-high walls. The chapel’s construction used heart kauri. The interior beams were exposed. This contrasts with the smooth exterior. Thin wooden slats covered the joints. This kept the building warm and waterproof. The chapel’s interior was originally quite austere. An early photograph from 1891 shows simple furnishings. The only ornate piece was an elaborately carved chair. This chair is still in the chapel today. The chapel’s windows were unique. Their exterior framing was rectangular. The interior design was a mitred lancet style. Originally there were five windows. Two were later removed. This change may have been to reduce harsh light on the altar. The chapel was moved in 1910. Its new location is the Auckland Diocesan Girls School. The move was due to issues with dampness at Bishopscourt. Selwyn Chapel’s journey reflects the evolution of Auckland itself. It shows the blend of religious devotion and colonial architecture. It remains a significant historical site in Auckland. It is a beautiful and inspiring example of Selwyn Gothic architecture.
