Initially named the Museo Municipal de Buenos Aires the Museo Histórico de Buenos Aires Cornelio de Saavedra stands before you. Its story begins on October 6 1921. A collection of historical and artistic objects donated by Serviliano Ricardo Rafael Zemborain formed its foundation. The museum wasn’t always here though. It moved several times. First to Avenida Corrientes then to Cerrito and finally to Quintana.

In 1941 a significant change occurred. The estate of Luis María Saavedra Cornelio de Saavedra’s nephew became its new home. Architect Manuel Augusto Domínguez transformed the existing building. He adapted it to resemble the elegant country houses common in Buenos Aires during the early 19th century. Silvia Saavedra Lamas de Pueyrredón the mayor’s wife and great-granddaughter of Cornelio de Saavedra oversaw the interior decoration. The museum reopened on May 25 1942. It was then that it received its current name. The collections focused heavily on Saavedra’s life and times.

A merging took place in 1947. The Museo Municipal de Buenos Aires then located on Fray Cayetano 65 joined with the Saavedra museum. By 1955 the building required expansion. Two new wings were added to accommodate the growing collection. This resulted in the impressive structure you see today. Don’t miss the cannons in the gardens. One is particularly fascinating. Baldomero Fernández Moreno even wrote a poem about it. After its service life the cannon became a guard post a ‘guarda cantón’ protecting a church from carriage damage.
