From the bustling streets of Chicago’s Douglas community, Unity Hall emerges. It stands as a silent testament to the city’s vibrant and complex past. Here at 3140 S. Indiana Avenue, Unity Hall whispers stories of changing communities and evolving purposes. Constructed in 1887, Unity Hall originally served a different community. It was known as the Lakeside Club, a Jewish social hub. The elegant red brick building, adorned with terra cotta decorations and sheet metal edging, was designed by architect L.B. Dixon. Imagine the lively gatherings within its walls, the laughter and conversations echoing through the halls. In 1917, Unity Hall’s role transformed. Chicago Alderman Oscar Stanton De Priest, the city’s first African-American council member, chose Unity Hall as the headquarters for his Peoples Movement Club. This organization aimed to empower the Black community politically. Under De Priest’s leadership, the club thrived, becoming a powerful force in Chicago’s Black Metropolis. This was a crucial step towards greater representation and equality. De Priest’s success at Unity Hall paved the way for his election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1928. He became the first African-American representative from a northern state, a milestone achieved in part due to the groundwork laid within these very walls. Unity Hall’s legacy continued. After the Peoples Movement Club, it served as the political headquarters for William L. Dawson. Dawson, a prominent figure in Chicago politics, further solidified Unity Hall’s place in the city’s history. The building later became a sanctuary for various church congregations, continuing its role as a community gathering place. Today, Unity Hall stands vacant, a reminder of the waves of change that have swept through Chicago. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and designated a Chicago Landmark. Despite its current quietness, Unity Hall’s walls still echo with the voices of those who shaped the city’s political and social landscape.
