Beyond the bustling streets lies Charlton New Testament Church of God. This unassuming church holds a captivating story within its walls. Charlton New Testament Church of God began its journey in the 1960s. It started as a humble Sunday school gathering in a home on Felday Road. The congregation eventually moved to Greenwich, holding services in a hall typically used for dances. Then, they found a home in an Anglican Church on Kemsing Road, paying a nominal rent of one shilling per year. They even tried to purchase the property when the Anglican Church closed, but their attempt was unsuccessful. Under Pastor Fergurson’s guidance, the church purchased 74 Charlton Church Lane. Later, they acquired the adjacent property at 76 Charlton Church Lane under Bishop Deverton Douglas. The church’s name has evolved over time, from Charlton Baptist Church to NTCG Charlton, then NTCG Charlton Praise & Worship Centre, and NTCG Charlton Tabernacle. Today, it is formally known as NTCG Charlton. Charlton New Testament Church of God has seen its membership fluctuate, peaking at over 120. It has persevered through challenges and boasts thriving ministries including youth, women’s, men’s, and children’s groups. They also run a food bank and are involved in community projects like London Citizens. Currently, the church has 54 members and, since 2023, has focused on “Building Strong Ministries, Membership, and Community, on sound Theology.” In August 2022, the church faced a difficult time with the sudden passing of their pastor, Rev. Rohan E. Anderson. Despite this loss, the church continues to rebuild. Charlton New Testament Church of God has witnessed numerous pastoral changes, with some pastors later becoming District Bishops and even an Administrative Bishop for England & Wales. The church has been led by Pastor Fergurson, Pastor Shepherd (the only female pastor), Pastor Johnson, Bishop Eric Brown (who later became the Administrative Bishop of England and Wales), Bishop Deverton Douglas, Pastor Wayne Brown, Rev. Desmond Williams, Rev. Rohan Anderson, and currently, Bishop Richard Young. Charlton New Testament Church of God is a vibrant community, working together to build God’s kingdom. With a focus on structure, the Holy Spirit, biblical teachings, and spirit-led worship, the church continues to grow and flourish. They welcome everyone to their Sunday service at 11:00 am for a time of praise, prayer, and teachings.
