Longing for a loving friendly community that worships God? Then you’ve arrived at Emmanuel Bible Church in Seattle. This church seeks to engage and encourage others through a life-changing Christian journey.
Emmanuel Bible Church has a fascinating story. It impacts and renews Seattle with the transforming message of Jesus Christ through words and actions. The church was born in 1930 in Seattle’s Phinney Ridge neighborhood. This came about from the merger of two smaller Swedish Covenant churches. One was in Ballard and the other in Fremont. They joined with some members from Seattle’s First Covenant Church on Capitol Hill.
These first members came from the Swedish Covenant tradition. But they decided to incorporate this new church as an independent congregation. They named it Emmanuel Tabernacle. This meant that the founding of Emmanuel was culturally and theologically rooted in the Covenant denomination. Yet, it operated autonomously for most of its existence in the 20th century.
Throughout the years, Emmanuel’s ministry took on a variety of expressions. These expressions were often associated with the passions and convictions of the Senior Pastor. However, two strong values of the Covenant remained essential. These were a love of scripture and an emphasis on mission.
In 2012, Emmanuel’s leadership team began a long discernment process. The church decided to investigate joining a larger network of churches. This was to strengthen their work. It was also to provide the resources and accountability needed for a healthy organization.
That discernment process eventually led them back to their roots. The team realized that Emmanuel’s values and history resonated most clearly with the Covenant community. A revision of the church constitution was undertaken. The congregation voted to establish Emmanuel as a member of the ECC. It was determined that the Senior Pastor would be a credentialed Covenant minister.
Emmanuel, like the Covenant, began as a predominantly Swedish church. Over the years, both the church and the denomination gradually opened themselves. They opened to a wider spectrum of ethnic and cultural perspectives. Today, they gather from a broad variety of personal backgrounds. They celebrate their unity in the midst of true diversity.
