Have you ever stopped to think about the evolution of a church? From the humble beginnings of a small congregation, to the thriving community, a church can truly mirror the spirit of a city. Here we are, standing in front of the Wesleyan Community Church in Chicago, a testament to resilience and faith. The church began its journey in 1954, a time when the city was experiencing a change. Founded in the home of Mrs. Annie Potter, it was led by Reverend James W.E. Mitchell. A small congregation of only twelve members, they dreamt of a physical space, a place to gather and grow their faith. The church continued to grow, and a new building at 212 East 95th Street was erected. However, Reverend McWilliams, who oversaw the construction, passed away before its completion. The congregation moved into the newly constructed building in 1964. The church continued to evolve, with various pastors leading it through its challenging and prosperous times. Reverend Dr. Howard W. Henson served as Wesley’s first full-time pastor and encouraged its growth. In 1968, the church became part of The United Methodist Church denomination, a significant turning point in its history. Later, the church outgrew its space at 212 East 95th Street and, under the leadership of Reverend H. Bernard King, a new building was constructed at 201 East 95th Street. The building was completed in 1983, and the congregation moved into its current home, a beautiful, historic building that stands proudly on the block. The Wesleyan Community Church, with every new pastor, experienced significant growth, a testament to the dedication and faith of its members. More than just a place of worship, this church has been a pillar in the community, fostering a sense of belonging and engaging in community outreach efforts. From its humble origins to its current vibrant presence, the Wesleyan Community Church continues to serve its people with the same passion and commitment. Today, you can witness the legacy of faith that has shaped the hearts of its members and watch how this church continues to be a beacon of hope in this ever-changing city.
