Feel the cool Lake Michigan breeze. Rogers Beach Park welcomes you. This 2.38 acre haven along the lake offers more than just sand and waves.
Rogers Beach Park has a rich history. Part of it joined the Chicago Park District in 1934. This was after a merger of park districts. The city later transferred another part in 1957. This was thanks to the Chicago Park and City Exchange of Functions Act. The park’s creation wasn’t random. It addressed a need. Rogers Park’s growing population of apartment dwellers lacked easy access to recreation. These street-end beaches provided a solution. Unlike larger beaches they lacked changing rooms or facilities. In 1977 the Park District expanded Rogers Beach Park even further.
The park’s namesake is Phillip Rogers. An Irish immigrant who arrived in 1836. He became a successful truck farmer. He amassed over 1600 acres of land. His legacy lives on in the name of Rogers Park and Rogers Avenue. His son-in-law Patrick L Touhy subdivided the land. He honored Rogers by naming the area after him.
Today Rogers Beach Park continues its tradition of recreation. The beach is open from 6 am to 11 pm. Swimming is permitted only when lifeguards are on duty. That’s from 11 am to 7 pm daily. Tennis courts add to the park’s recreational offerings. It’s a place where the past meets the present. It’s a place where history and recreation blend seamlessly. Generations have enjoyed its shores. Its tennis courts have seen countless matches. Rogers Beach Park is more than just a park. It is a living testament to Chicago’s history and its enduring spirit. It is a quiet oasis. It is a vibrant community hub. So take a moment. Breathe in the fresh air. Enjoy Rogers Beach Park.
