A forgotten corner of Dallas County. That’s Sand Branch. A place where history whispers from the cracked earth. Here you stand before a legacy etched in hardship and resilience.

Sand Branch. An unincorporated community. Founded in 1878 by formerly enslaved people from Louisiana. They sought refuge. They sought opportunity. They built a life on this land. At its peak Sand Branch thrived. Around 400 residents called it home.

Imagine their struggles. Lack of running water. Contaminated wells. Poverty. Yet they persevered. They built a community. They built a church. The Sand Branch Baptist Church. A hub of activity. A place of faith. A symbol of hope.

Adjacent to the church lies the Sand Branch Cemetery. Doc Glenn Charlie Stark and Cicero Floyd donated the land. It’s a resting place. For many formerly enslaved people. Their stories are lost to time. Many grave markers are illegible or lost. Yet their presence endures.

In 1910 that land was donated. That’s a poignant detail. It shows their commitment to community. Even in their hardship they found a way to honor their ancestors.

But the story doesn’t end there. Today fewer than 100 residents remain. Sand Branch faces challenges. But hope remains. A revitalization project is underway. HydroPanels are being installed to provide water. This community refuses to be forgotten.

The Sand Branch Cemetery. It’s more than just a graveyard. It’s a testament to the endurance of the human spirit. A quiet tribute to those who built a life from nothing. It is a reminder of Sand Branch’s rich and often overlooked past. Sand Branch continues to fight for its future. It’s a fight worth supporting. A story worth remembering. A community worth celebrating.
